e-learning communication

This concept project is a scenario based eLearning that tests educators on their abilities to successfully communicate with parents in the most effective way.
  • My role:  Instructional Designer, E-Learning Developer, Visual Designer

  • Audience: New and existing educators who communicate with parents virtually.

  • Tools:  Articulate Storyline 360, Adobe Xd, Adobe Illustrator, Figma

Overview

About:  Following the 2020 Pandemic, more districts, parents, and educators are choosing and/or transitioning into online learning. With the differences of online vs. traditional settings of education, communication has been a challenge considering the social aspects of face-to-face learning. The out-of-sight out-of-mind has brought the issue of attendance in schools which affects the funding in curriculum, staffing, and overall survival of the institutions.

Objective: Educators are able to communicate effectively and engage our parents with the transition to eLearning classes.

Problem:  Educator and Parent communication is lacking due to the eLearning transition from traditional learning. This has caused low attendance ratings which means less funding for charter and public schools.

Solution: Statistically, educator to parent communication and involvement has increased the numbers  of student attendance, academic growth, and achievement.

process

I designed and developed this project

with the following steps:

  • Creating the Action Map

  • Writing the Text-based Storyboard

  • Designing the Visual Mockups

  • Developing the Interactive Prototype

  • Finalizing and Publishing the Project

02

action map

I began working with fellow Subject Matter Experts (SME) to develop an action map that defines the overall goal in our learning experience. Creating the action map is our blueprint to what we identify as specific actions that achieve our goals success.

The information architecture is designed to obtain the skills necessary to effetely communicate through e-Learning. Once the prioritized five keys of the individuals actions are achieved these five keys will develop into their own interaction in the scenario.

After approval of the action map with the assistance of our SME, I took our information and started to create the text-based storyboard.

text based storyboard

Text-based storyboards create many benefits in developing a functional prototype.

As I reached the development of my text-based storyboard, the five high priority actions in the action map above became the correct answer choices. The common mistakes were placed as distractors for the scenario consequences. This context, as well as the information provided from fellow educators helped me identify the consequences and outcomes that would occur in real-life.

After developing the storyboards, I was able to see our information as a design and was excited to start creating our learning experience with one of my favorite tools- Adobe XD.

visual mockups

The design process is one of my favorite parts of creating a learning experience. I started off with a paper mockup drawn to help me layout the learning experience which was then translated into digital mockups. After multiple iterations, the final aesthetics are shown below. Each visuals were created with the knowledge of color theory and design principles but with the importance of creating a functional and solid user experience.

interactive prototype

Next, I developed the interactive prototype in Articulate Storyline 360. Using my storyboard, visual mockups, and text-based storyboard. More iterations were developed based upon feedback.

Results & Takeaways

This project provided me with the opportunity to work with Articulate Storyline 360, AWS,  collaborate with peers, integrate feedback, and learn new programs and tools. I have grown significantly as an eLearning developer and instructional designer, but most importantly, I loved pushing myself creatively and overcoming this challenge.
